AZERIKIMYA

Decarbonisation

Decarbonisation Inventory of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) EmissionsSince 2008, AZERIKIMYA has conducted a comprehensive inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all areas of activity and publishes annual reports reflecting its environmental performance.
Cooperation with the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR)AZERIKIMYA actively cooperates with the World Bank’s GGFR initiative. Within this framework, a carbon dioxide emission reduction plan was developed and successfully implemented during 2011–2015 across company-operated and partner projects.
The company received the GGFR Excellence Award in:
  • 2012 – for gas utilization projects in the Guneshli field and Oil Rocks fields
  • 2015 – for the Gas Flaring Reduction project in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields in cooperation with bp
Associated Gas Emission Reduction PlanIn 2017, AZERIKIMYA approved the Associated Gas Reduction Plan for 2017–2022, including targeted action measures to prevent gas emissions into the atmosphere.
The company joined the World Bank’s Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 (ZRF) initiative and achieved significant results:
  • Associated gas emissions reduced to approximately 2% of total production (2020)
  • Onshore production sites achieved zero carbon dioxide emissions for the first time in the region
NAMA Project (Low-Carbon Development)In cooperation with the United Nations and with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), AZERIKIMYA implemented the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) project.
  • Key Components:Energy efficiency in buildings
  • Transition to alternative fuels in transport
  • Collection and utilization of associated gas
Achievements:Energy Efficiency:
  • Installation of solar panels (10 kW, 23 kW, 15 kW systems)
  • Integration of wind generators and hybrid renewable systems
  • Building insulation and energy-saving systems at production facilities
Transport Decarbonisation:
  • Introduction of hybrid vehicles (Toyota RAV4, Toyota Auris)
  • Eco-driving simulator and training programs
  • Over 1,000 drivers certified
Gas Utilization:
  • Installation of compressors, separators, and control systems
  • Construction of a 32 km gas pipeline
  • Supply of processed gas to 15 villages (1,250 subscribers)
Methane Emission Reduction (MGP Initiative)Since 2019, AZERIKIMYA has participated in the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP) initiative, focusing on reducing methane emissions across the natural gas value chain.
Caspian Environmental Protection Initiative (CEPI)In 2020, AZERIKIMYA, together with international partners, established the Caspian Environmental Protection Initiative (CEPI).
  • Objectives:Combat climate-related environmental risks
  • Protect the Caspian Sea ecosystem
  • Promote transparency and sustainability in oil and gas operations
Upstream Emission Reduction (UER) & LDAR ProgramAZERIKIMYA implements Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs to identify and eliminate emissions.
Key results:
  • Use of infrared technology for leak detection
  • Certified emission reductions (UER)
  • Integration into the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS)
  • First Azerbaijani project registered under EU Fuel Quality Directive
Low-Carbon Development Strategy (2021–2030)The strategy focuses on:
  • Reducing GHG emissions
  • Implementing low-carbon technologies
  • Managing climate risks
  • Meeting national climate commitments
