The Geophysics and Geology Department (GGD) was established on December 23, 2005, based on the former Geophysics and Engineering Geology Production Union, by order of Azerikimya. The Department was created to study the deep geological structure of the Earth’s crust, both onshore and offshore, and to conduct comprehensive geophysical surveys—including seismic and gravimagnetic studies—in preparation for deep exploration drilling within local structures.
The Department performs geophysical well logging, logging while drilling, geological and technological supervision of drilling operations, well completion, as well as engineering, geological, and topographic works in oil and gas fields. GGD carries out exploration and field geophysics, complex engineering and geological investigations—such as drilling, planning, bathymetric, seismic, and acoustic surveys—and thematic research both in onshore fields and in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, as well as internationally under contractual agreements.
The organizational structure of the Department includes the Exploration Geophysics Unit, Field Geophysics Unit, Complex Engineering Research Units, and a Production Service Base, ensuring the full cycle of geophysical and geological operations from planning to data interpretation.
GGD performs a wide range of engineering and geological works, including engineering-geological drilling, sonar planning, bathymetric surveying, continuous seismic-acoustic profiling, structural mapping, topographic and navigation surveys in both offshore and onshore areas. The Department also conducts engineering-geological investigations for the construction of hydro-technical facilities, pipelines, terminals, port infrastructure, power plants, and other offshore installations.
The primary objective of these surveys is to explore new hydrocarbon prospects, refine the geological structure of study areas, determine the extent of oil and gas-bearing formations, identify optimal locations for exploration wells, and provide essential data to guide future exploration programs. These activities play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable growth of oil and gas resources.
In recent years, the Department has carried out 2D and 3D seismic exploration and gravimagnetic research in a number of offshore fields, including “8 March,” “Bulla-Deniz,” “Oil Rocks–Palchiq Pilpilasi,” “Goshadash,” “Gurgan-Deniz–Chilov Island,” and “Merdekan-Deniz–Gala Bay,” as well as in onshore areas such as “Kur-Gabarry,” “Yevlakh-Aghjabedi,” “Khidirly-Bandovan,” and “Mughan Monocline–Jalilabad.” The acquired seismic data has been processed and interpreted using modern software and advanced analytical techniques.
The Department has also conducted seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation services for international partners, including ConocoPhillips, bp, Equinor, and JOGMEC, demonstrating its capability to meet global industry standards.
Today, the Geophysics and Geology Department is equipped with modern geophysical instruments, advanced data processing and interpretation software, and a highly qualified workforce, enabling it to successfully implement complex geological and geophysical projects both domestically and abroad.
