AZERIKIMYA

Reducing gas

Reducing gas flaring and ensuring the effective collection of associated gas is a key component of AZERIKIMYA’s environmental responsibility initiatives. The company places strong emphasis on minimizing gas emissions, process losses, and leaks across the entire oil and gas value chain—from production to distribution—while maintaining active cooperation with leading international partners.
Over the past 15 years, AZERIKIMYA has implemented a range of initiatives and achieved significant results:
Key Achievements
  • Key AchievementsInitiated a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory across all operations in 2008
  • Awarded the GGFR Excellence Award (2012) for gas utilization projects in the Guneshli and Oil Rocks fields
  • Developed and successfully implemented the GHG Reduction Plan (2011–2015)
  • Received the GGFR Excellence Award (2015) jointly with bp for reducing gas flaring in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields
  • Adopted and completed the Climate Change Mitigation Strategy (2010–2020)
  • Joined the World Bank’s Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative and Methane Guiding Principles (2019)
  • Implemented the NAMA project (2017–2019) for low-carbon development

  • Approved and executed the Associated Gas Reduction Plan (2017–2022)
  • Implemented the Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program

  • Participates as a member of the State Commission on Climate Change
  • Approved the AZERIKIMYA 2021–2030 Low-Carbon Development Strategy
Operational Improvements. In 2012, a low-pressure compressor station was commissioned at the Guneshli field to capture and utilize associated gas. Additionally, well operation methods in several fields were transitioned from gas-lift (GL) to Subsurface Rod Pump systems, improving efficiency and reducing emissions.
  • Results of Gas Utilization Projects250–280 million m³/year of gas collected at Oil Rocks fields
  • 300–310 million m³/year collected at the Guneshli field
  • Captured gas successfully delivered to end consumers

Low-Carbon Development Strategy (2021–2030)The AZERIKIMYA Low-Carbon Development Strategy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of economically viable and environmentally efficient technologies.
As part of its role in the State Commission on Climate Change, AZERIKIMYA has developed a corporate methodology for GHG calculation, which has been reviewed and positively evaluated at the governmental level.
MRV System ImplementationTo strengthen emissions management, AZERIKIMYA has launched a Measuring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system aimed at:
  • Improving accuracy of GHG inventory reporting
  • Enhancing digitalization of environmental data
  • Reducing dependency on manual processes
  • Ensuring transparency and traceability across operations
